Last year’s semi-final repeat saw Russia hold back Sweden for a 5-3 win after going three goals ahead before the Swedes drew level only for Yevgeni Malkin and Vladimir Tarasenko to seal it in the third period.

Canada ran out 9-0 winners over Belarus to cruise to a first semi-finals since 2009, with a four-goal run in the first quarter starting the goal-rush which did not let up as Tyler Seguin bagged a hat-trick.

USA came from a goal down to defeat Switzerland 3-1, with two goals in a minute midway through the second period to continue their march to the semi-finals.

For the second year running two-time winners Lyon have fallen at the last-16 stage after a home defeat. Lyon, leading on away goals, had the better of the few openings.

However, with ten minutes left, substitute Marie-Laure Delie’s shot was parried by Sarah Bouhaddi and Fatmire Alushi turned the ball in to add to her first-leg equaliser. Lyon pushed forward, but Paris are into the quarter-finals for the first time.
