How France battles to keep French alive at Olympics
The French language will remain a staple part of the Olympic Games, and it’s no easy task.

Even if you don’t speak a word of French, you probably understand the above after coming across it (or something similar) at each Olympic Games opening ceremony.
French may no longer be considered a global international language or even the language of Europe after the rise and rise of English in recent decades, but it is still an official language of the Olympics – a legacy of the Frenchman who founded the games Pierre de Coubertin.
And French authorities are determined to make sure their language remains one of the official languages of the Olympic Games.
The organization, which boasts 57 member countries, has sent a delegate, known as the Grand Temoin (Great witness) to each Olympics since 2004 to monitor that the French language is actually being used for the athletes and spectators, a move introduced after French started to become less popular as the use of English soared.
At this year’s games in Rio, the job has gone to jazz saxophonist Manu Dibango of Cameroon, who is there to perform but also to oversee that amount of French on hand.
‘It’s a struggle each time’
He told the New York Times that he saw the job as « being the flag-bearer of the 300 million people around the world who speak French ».
Dibango is expected to closely monitor the level of French used on signage and announcements and produce a report afterwards. Early signs look good too, with the announcements for the opening ceremony made in English, Brazil’s national language Portuguese, and French.
Previous reports from other summer and winter games, however, have included complaints that some announcements weren’t in French, or that new sports came without sufficient French terminology.
Michaëlle Jean, the secretary general of the International organization of Francophonie, told the paper that the job of keeping the Olympics in French was « a struggle each time ».
« We must be there to make sure the French signs and documents and information are there. We have 3,000 athletes and a lot of people in the public from Francophone countries, » she said.
So should everything be in French?
Well, quite simply, yes (according to the rules, at least). The Olympic charter specifically states that the games have two official languages, English and French.
This rule is a result of the fact that the modern games were invented by a Frenchman, Pierre de Coubertin, but are no doubt in place as well considering the huge population of the world that speaks French.
If we forget the rules, however, one can only wonder if having everything in three languages is really necessary.
After all, there are more people in the world who speak Spanish (not to mention Mandarin, Hindi, and Arabic) than French – so surely they should get a look in somehow?
And as for the live broadcasts, many countries will have their own native-speaking correspondents on the microphone anyway, talking over the often lengthy announcements in French, English, and Portuguese.
So does French really still have a place at the Olympic Games? The jury is out on this one.

Heureusement qu’il l’a bien pris. Une bonne tranche de rigolade en perspective !!
C’est son premier jour de stage, et il s’endort devant son écran : l’histoire aurait pu mal finir, mais ses collègues avaient de l’humour, et lui aussi.
Photo de famille au dormeur dans une start-up. © Reddit /TheOrangeDuckQue celui qui ne s’est jamais endormi au travail lui jette la première paupière… Le premier jour d’un stage, en revanche, cela peut mal finir… Cela n’aura heureusement pas été le cas de celui qui se fait appeler le « canard orange » (The Orange Duck) sur le Net. Alors qu’il s’était endormi devant son écran, un des associés de la start-up s’en rend compte et a l’idée du jour, celle qui peut vous changer une journée de bureau : prévenir tout le monde pour faire une bonne vieille photo de groupe. Tout le monde est sur la photo, personne ne manque à l’appel. Et, bien au centre de l’image, trône le dormeur ! Cheese, photo, et tout le monde repart en veillant à ne pas le réveiller.
Détourné et partagé
Imaginez sa surprise à son réveil, en découvrant la photo sur son bureau. Et c’est là que sa réaction va changer la donne. Plutôt que de mal le prendre ou de culpabiliser, il la trouve tellement drôle qu’il décide de la poster sur le célèbre site de partage Reddit. Résultat : en quelques heures, elle tourne au phénomène. Elle se partage, elle circule, se prête à tous les montages de la part de la génération Photoshop amatrice de « PsBattle », chacune de ces nouvelles créations étant à son tour vue des centaines de milliers de fois.
Le stagiaire endormi se retrouve entouré de princesses Leia, sur scène dans la peau de Paul McCartney ou de Donald Trump, réincarnation de Musclor, sur un tee-shirt façon Bob Marley, et même dans les Simpsons ! En quelques heures, son visage détourné fait littéralement le tour du Web et du monde.
Quant au dormeur masqué, l’histoire finit aussi bien pour lui : il poursuit son stage, et a expliqué au Huffington Post qu’il allait soigner les problèmes d’anémie qui le font s’endormir ainsi devant son écran. Moralité : si vous voulez connaître votre heure de gloire sur le Net, il vous faut trois ingrédients : vous endormir au bureau, des collègues en or et un solide sens de l’humour.

It’s his first day in the office, and he falls asleep in front of it : the story could have ended badly, but his colleagues have good sense of humor, and him too.

Let he who has never slept at work cast the first eyelid … The first day of a course, however, it may end badly … This will fortunately not the case of the man who calls himself the ‘ orange duck’ on the Net. Drame de « Dropped » en Argentine / French Adventure TV ‘Dropped’ tragedy in Argentina
L’accident des 2 hélicoptères en Argentine pendant le tournage de l’émission de jeu d’aventure « Dropped » (« Largués » en pleine nature en français). J’adore le sport en général, je suis très triste. La France perd 3 grands champions dans leur discipline respective (Florence Arthaud, Camille Muffat et Alexis Vastine). N’oublions pas les 7 autres victimes aussi (5 Français membres des équipes techniques et les 2 pilotes Argentins). Condoléances à tous leurs proches.
J’ai été abasourdi et très triste par la nouvelle en me levant ce matin. J’allume ma radio et j’entends parler de Florence Arthaud, je ne comprends pas pourquoi. Je me dis c’est bizarre et j’espère que ce n’est pas grave. Et puis j’entends une journaliste dire qu’on entendra plus sa voix éraillée. C’est là que j’ai compris que c’était très grave. Et puis j’ai appris la terrible nouvelle des 10 décès. Je n’ai pas pu retenir quelques larmes tôt ce matin. J’ai cru que c’était un cauchemar. Je n’y croyais pas au départ mais je me suis rendu à l’évidence. C’est vraiment très triste, surtout qu’ils étaient en pleine vie et jeunes. Florence Arthaud 57 ans, Camille Muffat 25 ans seulement et Alexis Vastine 28 ans. La vie est injuste parfois, mourir suite à un accident d’hélicoptère mais bon ce sont les circonstances. Vous me direz ce n’est pas la 1ère fois (on se rappelle de Daniel Balavoine, Thierry Sabine sur le Dakar en 1986) et malheureusement pas la dernière mais quelle tristesse.

There was 2 helicopters crash in Argentina for a French entertainment adventure TV called « Dropped ». I love sport, i’m really sad. Our country has lost 3 big sport champions in their own sport (Florence Arthaud, Camille Muffat and Alexis Vastine). Don’t forget the 7 other victims (5 TV French crew members and the 2 Argentinians pilots). All condolences to their families and friends.
I was shocked and very sad by the news first thing in the morning. I turn on my radio and I hear Florence Arthaud, I do not understand why. I think it’s weird and I hope it’s not serious. And then I heard a reporter say that there will no more heard his hoarse voice. This is where I realized that it was very serious. And then I learned the terrible news of 10 deaths. I did not hold back tears early this morning. I thought it was a nightmare. I did not believe at first, but I went to the evidence. It’s really sad, especially that they were in full life and youth. Florence Arthaud 57, Camille Muffat 25 years only and Alexis Vastine 28 years. Life is unfair sometimes, to die following a helicopter crash but here are the circumstances. You may say this is not the 1st time (remember French singer Daniel Balavoine, organizer Thierry Sabine on the rallye Dakar in 1986) and unfortunately not the last, but how sad.

Du côté français pour moi le second but de Lilian Thuram en demi-finale contre la Croatie en 1998 reste vraiment à part pour moi. Après c’est difficile de choisir un seul but il y en a tellement qui méritent d’être le plus beau but.

Enjoy it as much as I enjoyed to watch again all these best goals, lots of memories !!! All big areas in the world are represented except Oceania in this video.
On the French side for me the second goal of Lilian Thuram in the semifinals against Croatia in 1998 remains truly special for me. After it’s hard to choose just one goal because there are so many that deserve to be the best goal in World Cup history.
