Champions League Results: Final scores and news from Wednesday

Two more Champions League contests, and still plenty to play for. The top club competiton in Europe continued on Wednesday with the Round of 16, as Manchester City played Dynamo Kiev and PSV hosted Atletico Madrid. Here’s everything you need to know.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 24, 2016

Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1  PSV 0-0 Atletico Madrid
Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1  Dynamo Kiev 1-3 Manchester City

1. City is sitting pretty

Manchester City can taste its first Champions League quarterfinal appearance. After a convincing 3-1 win at Dynamo Kiev, the team has more than a foot in the next round. It’s worth noting that Kiev has not played an official match since Dec. 9, so it’s not like this City squad faced a dominant force of the likes of Barcelona. But an away Champions League is always important, regardless of the opponent. Sergio Aguero’s opener set the tone, while Yaya Toure’s 90th minute strike gave the team some breathing room heading into the home leg. This team has what it takes to continue on in this tournament, despite a poor couple of weeks in England. With a two-goal advantage, it should be easy going in the second leg.

2. Atletico has the advantage

A 0-0 draw between Atletico Madrid and PSV means there is all to play for at the Vicente Calderon in the second leg. PSV held on with 10 men for much of the second half, and it won’t look at it as a bad result. A 1-1 draw at Atletico would see PSV advance on away goals. If Benfica could go in and beat Atletico in the Spanish capital, why can’t the Dutch side? Still, there is no doubt that Diego Simeone’s team has the advantage in the second leg. But you never know what could happen. A penalty kick, a big error, something could turn the tide. Nobody thought Celta Vigo would knock Atleti out of the Copa del Rey. There’s hope for PSV.

3. Return legs

The return legs for these matches will be on Tuesday, March 15 at 20:45 (8:45 pm Western Europe Time) ; 3:45 p.m. ET.

Manchester City took a commanding lead over Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League round of 16 as they dispatched the Ukrainian side 3-1 at the NSC Olimpiyskiy on Wednesday.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva put the Citizens ahead at half-time, before Vitaliy Buyalsky pulled one back for the hosts in the second half. Yaya Toure secured the win late on with a sublime effort from distance.

Atletico Madrid and PSV Eindhoven played out a 0-0 draw in the Netherlands, with Los Rojiblancos failing to get on the scoresheet despite the Dutch side playing the last quarter of the game with 10 men as Gaston Pereira saw red for two bookings—though Diego Godin did have a goal disallowed.

City enjoyed the perfect start in Ukraine when Aguero pounced on Yaya Toure’s knockdown, per BT Sport Football:

Squawka Football and ESPN writer Miguel Delaney highlighted the Argentinian’s impressive form:

Buoyed by their early goal, the Sky Blues continued their positive approach to the game and showed intent to double their tally as they pressed, pushed forward and passed with real purpose, and Aguero flashed an effort narrowly wide.

The visitors scored their second shortly before half-time through Silva, who finished off an outstanding team move. Aguero found Raheem Sterling with a lovely backheel, and the England international coolly slid an exquisite ball to Silva, who made no mistake at the far post.

Kiev improved after the break and were rewarded for their pressure with a goal, albeit in fortunate circumstances as Buyalsky’s powerful long-range effort deflected off Nicolas Otamendi and past the helpless Joe Hart.

The hosts struggled to find an equaliser, though, and City enjoyed a strong finish to the game as they attacked with renewed vigour.

Toure was guilty of missing a gilt-edged chance to score when he headed wide from six yards, buy the Ivorian made amends several minutes later when he curled in a sumptuous effort from outside the area, per BT Sport Football:

Atletico spurned two good chances as they edged an open first-half contest with PSV.

Luciano Vietto latched onto a ball over the top inside three minutes and successfully dinked the ball over Jeroen Zoet, only to see his effort cleared off the line by Jeffrey Bruma.

Antoine Griezmann had a similar chance later on in the half as he was sent clear by a lovely through ball, but Zoet was alert to the Frenchman—who attempted a similar finish to Vietto—and denied him with a good save.

Davy Propper fashioned PSV’s best chance of the game as he worked his way into Atleti’s area, but the midfielder could only direct his effort straight at Jan Oblak while Los Rojiblancos defence converged rapidly to block Jurgen Locadia and Jetro Willems’ efforts.

Godin thought he’d given the visitors the lead on 61 minutes when he nodded Koke’s corner into the net, but the defender was penalised for climbing on Hector Moreno.

Pereiro earned his marching orders shortly after for a careless second yellow—not helped by Godin’s theatrical reaction. Despite their man advantage, Los Rojiblancos struggled to create clear-cut chances in the closing period of the game with PSV defending well.

As football writer Jack Benson noted, Griezmann is now enduring a lengthy run without scoring:

What will further be a concern is Atletico’s overall form in front of goal in the Champions League, with football journalist Dermot Corrigan providing the worrying stat:

However, PSV might also struggle to break down their opponents in the return leg, as BT Sport Football revealed:

With three away goals, Man City will expect to progress when they welcome Dynamo to the Etihad Stadium in the second leg.

As for Atletico, their failure to do so could prove costly, but PSV will need to produce something special to get an away goal of their own.
