Tour de France Stage 14: MTN-Qhubeka’s Cummings wins on Mandela Day


On a day when the break finally got away and stayed away, it looked like a French contingent would be battling it out for stage honours. But it was Steve Cummings who took advantage of an existential crisis between Thibaut Pinot and Romain Bardet to fly by them in the final 2km and take a popular stage win for African wildcard squad MTN-Qhubeka on Mandela Day.

Today Argentina and Belgium advanced with 3-0 wins and will face each other in the semifinals. The Murray brothers one the doubles tie for Great Britain and they lead 2-1 with Murray scheduled to play Simon tomorrow. Hewitt and the Ausie team were able to prevail in doubles today, but they still trail Kazakhstan 2-1 for a spot in the semi finals.

Roughriders remain winless after 27-24 loss to Lions

REGINA – A.C. Leonard was all smiles after his performance under the Friday night lights. The rookie wideout hauled in two touchdown passes that propelled the B.C. Lions to a 27-24 victory over the host Saskatchewan Roughriders, the second straight win for the Lions over their West Division opponent.

« I knew my day would come eventually, » said the first-year receiver, who had four catches for 26 yards. « I’ve been putting in my work, staying ready and it feels good to get my first touchdowns. »

Leonard’s second score of the game, a two-yard reception, proved to be the difference as the Riders mounted a late charge to make things interesting.

Cato connects with Green as Alouettes top Ticats 17-13 in defensive battle

MONTREAL – Rookie quarterback Rakeem Cato found S.J. Green with a touchdown pass and the Montreal Alouettes downed the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 17-13 in a defensive CFL struggle on Thursday night.

Boris Bede had three field goals and a single for Montreal (2-2), who has not lost at home to the Tiger-Cats in 18 games since October 20, 2002.

Ray Holley scored his first career touchdown and Justin Medlock had a pair of field goals for Hamilton (1-2).

Ticats quarterback Zach Collaros threw three interceptions, including one to defensive lineman Alan-Michael Cash with 1:47 left to play.

On a final drive, Hamilton’s Terrence Toliver fumbled and Gabriel Knapton recovered.

Montreal also contained Hamilton’s star kick returner Brandon Banks, who had runback TDs in each of the first two games.

The Ticats led 10-7 during a flag-filled first half in which neither team moved the ball consistently.
