Greg Van Avermaet
Cast a glance at Van Avermaet’s palmarès and you will notice there are a lot of second and third place finishes. He’s developed a bit of a reputation for being one of cycling’s ‘nearly men’. This year alone he nearly won Strade Bianchi (2nd), he nearly won Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix (both 3rd), and he nearly won Amstel Gold (5th).
Perhaps that reputation is a little unfair, this is his fourth win of the season after all, fifth if you include the overall at the Tour of Belgium.
Nonetheless, today’s slow motion uphill sprint was a strong showing and is the biggest individual win of his career. He can now relax his mind from the racing a little as he and his wife, Ellen, await the birth of their first child, due on 26th July, the day the Tour de France rolls into Paris.
