When I was young, I learned to draw a Christmas holly. It was easy, and fun, and I felt very clever for being able to decorate all my Christmas present tags, cards and so on with this delightful festive icon.

And so it was that I came to reflect upon the meaning of « Happy Holidays ». It must mean, I reasoned, « Happy Days of Holly ». After all, no one ever mentioned holly bushes or berries at any other time of year. That must be it.
I held on to this conclusion and for many years, affirmed this understanding by adding a cheerful holly symbol to all the Christmas stuff I generated to decorate or give each year.
Never did it occur to me that « holiday » might mean « holy day ». You may guess we never attended church.
