Weekend Round-Up: Derby Stalemate, Beira-Mar Victory and Meira Leaves

Leões/Lions

Match report from PortuGOAL.net:

The first derby of the season was another highly exciting encounter at the Estádio da Luz. Jorge Jesus’ Benfica welcomed back Enzo Peréz into the team after he missed the win against Boavista through injury. Ruben Amorim picked up an injury in that game was replaced by André Almeida in the starting line-up.

Sporting were still without regular right-back Cédric Soares so Marco Silva kept faith in youngster Ricardo Esgaio over the recently recalled Miguel Lopes. William Carvalho was restored into midfield in the place Oriol Rosell after he served his suspension and Islam Slimani also recently patched things up with Sporting management and he started up front ahead of Fredy Montero.

It was the home side who began the game the better as Sporting struggled to settle down. It was the visitors who had the first sniff at goal when a Jefferson corner found…

[Holland] Eredivisie Review: Ajax lose again, PSV make it four from four

All Football

271px-Eredivisie_logo.svgAjax slipped to a second Eredivisie straight defeat when losing 2-0 at Groningen, while leaders PSV made it four wins on the trot on Sunday.

Eric Botteghin struck just after half-time for Groningen against the champions and Michael de Leeuw made the game safe in the closing stages as Ajax followed up last weekend’s home reversal versus PSV by suffering another early setback to their title defence.

It was a similar story at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, where Luuk de Jong scored his first league goal for PSV.

Adam Maher opened his Eredivisie account for the season in stoppage time as PSV continue to set the pace at the top of the table.

Zwolle’s 100 per cent record was ruined by a 3-1 defeat at NAC Breda, where Tomas Necid equalised for the visitors after Stipe Perica’s opener.

But Erik Falkenburg struck from the penalty spot and substitute Elson…

Serie A Review 2014-15, Week 1

Passionate Soccer Fans

Hello everyone welcome to the Serie A where the beautiful game is played with style

vidalJuventus defeated Chievo di Verona 1-0 in the inaugural game of another season in Serie A. With Massimiliano Allegri at the helm after Antonio Conte’s departure Juve will try to make it 4 Scudettos in a row. They defeated a stubborn Chievo on an own goal by Christiano Birighi after a nice header by the Uruguayan international Martin Caceras. A good start for Juve, a win on the road is always telling. Chievo who picked up 15 new players in the off season are transformed, after barely making the cut last year they don’t want to go through that again. Juve was without Andrea Pirlo, Giorgio Chellini and Andrea Barzagli, 3 big pieces of the puzzle and still played really well. They dominated possession although…

La Liga Roundup Week 2

Every Day Is Zlatan Day

It’s over. La Liga is done. Barcelona are champions. Wait, what? You mean the title isn’t decided yet? Welcome to another edition of the Liga roundup. Let’s recap the show.

Real Soceidad 4 – Real Madrid 2: Carlo Ancelotti is finding out  that you can’t win games without a proper defensive midfielder (unless you’re Liverpool and are playing Spurs). After taking the lead 5 minutes into the game with a Sergio Ramos header off the Kroos corner, Gareth Bale doubled Los Blancos’ lead 10 minutes into the game. No Ronaldo, no problem, right?

Well, not quite. While Real’s first thirty minutes were fantastic, they imploded spectacularly in the remaining hour. Goals from Inigo Martinez, Zurutuza, and Carlos Vela made Real Madrid really miss Alonso and Di Maria. « We had a negative approach in every aspect of our game. We can’t continue to play like this, » said Iker Casillas.

Valencia 3 –…

Bundesliga Roundup: Week 2

Every Day Is Zlatan Day

bundesliga-football-club-soccer-german-soccer-league-fcb-bayern-munich-robert_3197895

Two weeks down in the German top tier, so let’s recap what happened!

– Schalke 1-1 Bayern Munich

The champs were held to one point by the miners. Playing in a warped 4-2-2-2 (cheers, Pep), Bayern struck first behind new boy Robert Lewandowski; his 10th minute strike opened his Munich scoring account. Just after the hour, though, newer new boy Xabi Alonso – playing hilariously deep but acquitting himself quite nicely – tried a clearance off the line that bounced in off Benedikt Howedes. Sweeper-keeper Manuel Neuer appealed for a handball, but no dice. Speaking of Neuer, he did this late in the first half:

– Augsburg 2-3 Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund were ahead 2-0 inside 15 minutes, and 3-0 with a dozen minutes to play, but Augsburg staged a furious rally to nearly receive a share of the spoils. Marco Reus was…well, Marco Reus: he scored the opener (see below…

Bayern sign talented youngster Sinan Kurt

chrisholleychatsfooty

Sinan Kurt has completed his move from Gladbach to Bayern. Sinan Kurt has completed his move from Gladbach to Bayern.

Borussia Mönchengladbach youngster Sinan Kurt has completed a move to German champions Bayern Munich. The 18-year-old has signed a four-year-deal with Bayern Munich after a fee was agreed, the move is reportedly costing Bayern €2.5 million.

The move has taken a while to get done, Gladbach didn’t want to see Kurt leave, he’s a fantastic talent and he was going to start edging his way into the first team this season, however the youngster wanted a move to Bayern and was refusing to sign a long term deal with Die Fohlen. Despite Gladbach trying to put up a fight Bayern have finally got their man and Kurt has finally got the move he wanted. The relationship between the two clubs has been damaged due to this deal, in the early stages of the move Max Eberl accused Bayern of talking to Kurt behind Gladbach’s…

Welbeck joins Arsenal

Nice one. I think it could be a great thing for Gunners, we’ll see.

The Gooner Zone

England striker Danny Welbeck has completed a permanent move to Arsenal from Manchester United for a fee reported to be around £16m. Not exactly the world class centre forward we’d been hoping for, especially having seen several world class strikers move this summer, but he has potential and should be a decent signing. I can’t see him displacing Giroud any time soon but he is better than Sanogo, and with Giroud out until the new year Welbeck will be first choice for the majority of the season.

I tend to trust the fans of the selling club to judge the player, and as far as I’ve seen most United fans aren’t happy – they rate him, like him, and think he has a lot of potential. The hope is that Arsene Wenger can turn Welbeck into our Sturridge – young English striker not yet living up to his potential, turned…

A-League All-Stars versus Juventus

Full Of Potential

About two weeks ago, the A-League All-Stars were up for a big challenge against one of the most successful clubs in Italia, Juventus. Led by former Juve champion Alessandro Del Piero, the All-Stars gave it all they had against the Italian giants.

The All-Stars got off to a good start with a great goal in the ninth minute by Marcelo Carrusca! It was a left foot cracker past football legend, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Fernando LlorenteThe next goal was scored by Fernando Llorente. Andrea Pirlo crossed in a lovely ball and the giant Spaniard headed it in to make it 1-1.  Llorente ran around the goals with his right arm up in the best celebration I’ve seen so far.

Tomi Juric put the All-Stars back on top after coming on as a sub in the second-half. The lead was short-lived, with French rising star Paul Pogba scoring a marvelous volley into the top left…

[Argentina] Primera Division Review: Velez stay perfect, Sanchez inspires River

All Football

Argentina_Primera_Division_LogoVelez Sarsfield preserved their 100 per cent record in the Argentine Primera Division, while River Plate ran rampant midweek.

In-form attacker Lucas Pratto was on target again as Velez made it four wins from four, edging Lanus 1-0 at the Estadio Jose Amalfitani on Thursday.

Pratto, who netted a brace against Independiente on Saturday, scored his fourth goal in three games with a strike seven minutes from time in Buenos Aires.

Velez are two points clear of River Plate at the league summit after four matchdays.

River Plate have dropped points previously but remain unbeaten following Wednesday’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Defensa y Justicia.

[USA] MLS Review: DC United extend lead, Galaxy win again

All Football

downloadDC United opened a four-point lead atop the Eastern Conference after trumping New York Red Bulls 2-0 in MLS.

Luis Silva and substitute Eddie Johnson both scored in the second half as the East high-flyers accounted for the Red Bulls in front of 19,453 spectators at the Robert F Kennedy Memorial Stadium on Sunday – a record crowd for United in 2014.

United were just a point clear of rivals Sporting Kansas City after Wednesday’s mauling at the hands of the Los Angeles Galaxy, but the team’s game in hand saw them edge clear.

Ben Olsen’s men have collected 46 points from 26 matches in the East, while defeat for New York has left the Red Bulls languishing two points outside the final play-off spot in sixth position.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy during the opening 45 minutes but neither side could make the breakthrough.

Manchester United have confirmed long-held suspicions that new signing Radamel Falcao is ‘allergic’ to Champions League football. The Colombian striker joined the Red Devils on a year-long loan after receiving assurances from the club that he would not be subjected to European club football’s elite competition this campaign.A United spokesperson said: « Manchester United are delighted to announce that Radamel Falcao has joined the club in not playing in the Champions League this season. »The deal was completed late last night after delays caused by a medical examination that revealed the player has developed an allergy to UEFA’s premier club competition. »Fortunately we were able to offer him guarantees that United would not be taking part in the Champions League for the for seeable future, and a deal was struck thanks to that and the fact we’re bunging him an obscene amount of cash every week. »Falcao had been desperate to leave Monaco after realising…

Falcao Joins United in Shock Deadline Day Transfer

Kyle's Daily Bulletin

Falcao Told the Media He Was Excited to Join « the Biggest Club in the World. »

The big story of 2014’s Deadline Day, the day soccer’s summer transfer window slams shut, was Colombian superstar Radamel Falcao joining Manchester United in a shock transfer.  Falcao, who left Ligue 1 club AS Monaco, had been linked with Real Madrid the entire summer.  Only two days ago, the striker appeared to confirm the move when he posted on Twitter about his dream move to Real coming true.

The post was later deleted, with Falcao saying he hadn’t posted it.  This morning, news broke that Manchester United were in the process of signing Falcao on a season-long loan, with an option to buy at the end of the loan.  The transfer dragged out the whole day, with a false rumor that Falcao had failed his medical spreading, before finally being completed two hours after the…
