Grâce à un doublé de James Rodriguez, la Colombie s’est défait de l’Uruguay (2-0) pour rejoindre le Brésil en quarts de finale de la Coupe du monde. Une première dans l’histoire du pays.

En infériorité numérique durant près d’une heure de jeu, le Costa Rica s’est imposé face à la Grèce au terme d’une intense séance de tirs au but (1-1, 5 tab 3). Les Ticos se qualifient pour la première fois de leur histoire en quart de finale.

Pogba elated after French win

France’s match-winner Paul Pogba hailed his winning goal as one of the best moments of his life as Les Bleus swept into the World Cup quarter-finals after beating Nigeria 2-0 in Brasilia.

Pogba’s header came in the 79th minute and Joseph Yobo’s own goal put the gloss on it for Didier Deschamps side.

« I have no words to describe this feeling, » said Pogba. « The whole country is behind us and scoring that goal really liberated us. I am so happy for the team and all of France.

« To score a goal for your country, especially in such an important game as this, to get into the last eight of the World Cup is one of the best moments of my life. »

Bratislava, Slovakia

methodically muddled

Not a whole lot to say about Bratislava. It’s another Eastern European, post-communist city that’s got plenty of charm. What I will say is that if you’re there in Winter and it’s pouring rain then it going to be bloody cold, I assure you of that. I wouldn’t say there’s anything mind-blowing about this little city but it’s certainly a worthy stopover for a day or two if you’re passing through. So here’s a bunch of pictures that will undoubtedly tell you more about Bratislava than I just did.

Before I flew for Seattle in the October of 2012, everyone told me to enjoy and immerse myself in the fall colors of Seattle – one of the best places in USA to witness Fall. And so did I. As expected the weather of Seattle was predictably unpredictable with light drizzle reaching the earth, just at any time of the day. And sunlight at the very next moment behind the clouds. Some say, its kind of depressing weather there due to the rain and months of low sunlight.

I was at the top of the Space Needle, enjoying the majestic view of the city and its suburbs, cloaked in fall colors. And then I saw this contrast where sunlight falling on the waters of Elliot Bay made a portion of the bay so bright, whereas rest of the bay was under the spell of the dark clouds. Le président exécutif de Google, Eric Schmidt, s’est rendu à Cuba cette semaine avec trois autres dirigeants de l’entreprise pour promouvoir « un internet libre », a-t-on appris dimanche du journal en ligne d’opposition « 14yMedio », dirigé par la blogueuse Yoani Sanchez.

M. Schmidt, Jared Cohen, Brett Perlmutter et Dan Keyserling « ont eu des réunions avec le secteur officiel », ont dialogué « avec des jeunes des écoles polytechniques » et ont visité samedi « l’Université de sciences informatiques (UCI) », dans l’ouest de La Havane, est-il indiqué sur le site de 14ymedio (www.14ymedio.com), sans plus de précisions sur les dates d’arrivée et de départ du groupe.

Durant cette visite de deux jours dont l’objectif était de « promouvoir les vertus d’un internet libre et ouvert », les dirigeants du géant américain d’internet ont également « contacté les rédacteurs et journalistes de 14ymedio », le premier média de presse indépendant apparu en 50 ans sur l’île.
