Yesssssssss!!!!! Rome falls to the Serb

Jadde: from Bosnia to Bengal

The Guardian:  always has great play-by-play coverage of tennis, complete with slightly malicious Brit humour:

« Second set: Djokovic 4-6, 5-3 Nadal* (*denotes server) « In a stadium built for a dictator, Mussolini, it is Novak who’s doing the dictating. » Yes, someone said that. A thumping forehand is followed by a drop, and Nadal is in all sorts, a booming crosscourt forehand clawing back a point.

« Third set: *Djokovic 4-6, 6-3, 3-1 Nadal (*denotes server) This is brilliantly, beautifully, brutally dismissive from Djokovic – he goes to 30-0 with a backhand swiped crosscourt. But there follows the kind of forehand return that gives small children nightmares, whip-clubbed down the lane with intense prejudice. Still, though, Djokovic closes out the game with ease.

Third set: *Djokovic 4-6, 6-3, 5-3 Nadal (*denotes server) There’s a slightly forlorn look about Nadal now, two groundstrokes absolutely smelted past him.

« Brilliant tennis from Djokovic today

Djokovic Defeats Nadal For Italian Title

Novak DjokovicNovak Djokovic extended his recent dominance over Rafael Nadal by rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory Sunday to win the Italian Open for the third time ? then dedicated the title to his flood-hit native Serbia.

Having also been beaten in Monte Carlo and Barcelona recently, it marked the first time in a decade that the top-ranked Nadal has lost more than two matches on clay in the same year.

Djokovic carved a heart on the clay with his racket to celebrate his title.

?This heart on the court is for you,? he told the fans in Italian during the victory celebration. ?It?s also a special dedication to my country, which is suffering a lot right now. My heart is with them.?

Authorities say 25 people have died in the Balkans because of the worst flooding in a century after three months? worth of rain fell on the region…

Left Fork Canyon and the Subway, Zion National Park

Zion Subway Panorama Panorama of the « Subway », Zion National Park

Most Zion visitors stay in the valley.
Zion National Park Zion Valley from the Angel’s Landing Trail

There are other parts of the park to visit. In order to not let some of these other areas become as overrun as the main valley a permit system is in place to limit the number of people. I am quite happy for this, solitude is one of my most valued commodities.

One hike available is called Left Fork Canyon, aka « The Subway ». The subway name is from a short section of the hike (the entire trip is 9 miles) where the canyon walls curve and it looks like you’re inside a subway tunnel.

The hike can be done two ways: From top to bottom as a through hike, you’ll need to cars, one to park at each end. This also necessitates that you have…

Atletico Madrid 1- Barcelona 1. Atletico Wins La Liga, Moneyball Style!

Studzup Blog

First and foremost, we will like to congratulate Atletico Madrid for winning one of the most thrilling seasons La Liga has had in a while.

With a much lower budget than rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona, and losing Falcao at the start of the season, Simeone made the most of what he had and we saw how Diego Costa (depending on his injury) will go to the World Cup with Spain, Arda Turan, Koke and Tiago consolidated a strong midfield and Courtois wins his second Zamora trophy. Even el Mono Burgos made headlines during the season when he wore Google Glasses during a La Liga Match against Getafe.

May 17 will always be a special day for Atletico. The exact day in 2013 Atletico won La Copa Del Rey against Real Madrid, in Real’s stadium! 2 away wins 2 years in a row. It can’t get better than that.

Danny's Football Bluff

I swear I wrote a post last week. It just didn’t seem to show up. How odd. Well in case you didn’t know, Manchester City won the EPL. If you didn’t know that but you are reading this I can only assume you are a blood relative of mine. In which case, the baby is doing fine and can you please bring us some soup.

Arsenal defeated Hull City to claim the FA Cup on Saturday night. Coming from 2-0 down was a hell of a feat, and full credit the Arsene Wenger’s men. Last time Arsenal won a trophy was 2005, pre-facebook & twitter. Meaning in order to be insufferable you had to find an Arsenal fan in person. Now they can shit you through the convenience of your smart phone. What an age we live in.

At the same time that Arsenal were lifting the FA Cup, Atletico…

Atlético Madrid faces reputational challenge

Football & Reputation

Congratulations to Atlético Madrid for clinching the Spanish League title. For the Los Colchoneros to win La Liga after 18 years is as much surprising as it is an incredible achievement, especially after securing the title at Camp Nou. Simeone’s leadership has been decisive during all season and he will forever be remembered by his ability to overcome the two Spanish giants: Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. In the next weekend, the team has a again a tremendous contest – the UEFA Champions League final, against Real Madrid and its obsession to win the 10th European title. Lisbon will for sure be on fire in an emotional battle between the two teams.

As a club, in my opinion, the biggest challenge that Atlético Madrid will face is in the long run. It is the same type of test that Valencia encountered, a decade ago, and failed. Can Atlético Madrid…

German Cup Final: Bayern Munich wins 2-0 vs Dortmund in Extra Time.

Studzup Blog

After receiving a beating by Real Madrid in the Champions League Semifinals, Pep Guardiola had been under a lot of pressure. From the media, fans and Bayern’s legendary captain and honorary President Franz Beckenbauer, his tiki-taka and possession-based strategies had been questioned with the lack of goals .

A season ago Bayern won the treble. Winning just 1 title this season would had been considered a catastrophe for the Bavarians.

But Pep’s team came through to win the German Cup final against the only team that can give them a run for their money in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund.

Not all eyes were on Guardiola, however, Robert Lewandowski will make the leap from Dortmund to Munich next season.

There was also the Orangutan that predicted Dortmund would win the title, but he was wrong this time.

The end of the match also delivered an awkward moment between Guardiola and Ribery…

League Analysis

Down the Flank

Here is a short analysis that gives info on which of the leading teams / winners in different European leagues has the best attack / defense.

League Leader Analysis League Leader Analysis

Best Defense

The graph clearly shows that Atletico Madrid are the team who have given emphasis to defense. They have the most number of interceptions, tackles per game as well as clean sheets. They have a solid back four which is supported well by the midfielders, as a result of which they defend as packs of four, and are quick to get out of the blocks once they recover possession. Simeone’s team has been the epitome of efficiency, even when it comes to attack. The number of saves per goal that Courtouis has made is very less as compared to the other teams, which shows how well the back four have covered up for their young goal keeper, on loan from Chelsea.

Edinson Cavani to stay at Paris St Germain

Come on you Reds

Edinson Cavani has announced that he will be staying at Paris St Germain next season.

The Uruguayan was said to have been unhappy with his move to France, after being forced to play on the right hand side of a front three, despite promises he will play as one of the main front men.

His personal life has been complicated by intense divorce proceedings, which has seen him frequently having to travel to Uruguay to deal with the court case.

Despite his on and off the field issues, Cavani still managed to score 25 goals in 42 appearances, a impressive figure considering he was often played out of position.

Ed Woodward, desperate for a marquee signing, was willing to capitalise on the situation by offering a £55 million deal for Cavani, who had moved to the French capital last July for the same price.

But during Paris St Germain’s title…
